Apple Is Building an AI Pin the Size of an AirTag — and It Could Arrive in 2027

Apple is developing a new AI-powered wearable that could change the way we interact with technology on a daily basis. The device, described internally as a pin or pendant, is still in the experimental phase, but it is already generating a lot of curiosity — and for good reason.

It is expected to hit the market in 2027, bringing a very different approach compared to anything we have seen so far in the wearable space. But fair warning: development is still in the early stages, and the project could be scrapped before it ever becomes a product. Even so, what has already leaked about the device is enough to build serious hype.

Unlike what many people might assume, Apple’s AI Pin is not meant to be a standalone product. The idea is for it to work as a smart iPhone accessory, equipped with a camera, microphone, and a dedicated chip — something similar to the H2 chip in the AirPods. Some Apple employees have already described the device as the eyes and ears of the iPhone, according to journalist Mark Gurman at Bloomberg.

Small as an AirTag but packed with technology on the inside, the device promises to put Siri literally right next to you, all the time. 🤖

In this article, we break down everything that is known so far about the Apple AI Pin:

  • How it will work in practice
  • What to expect from the design and hardware
  • Details about the camera, microphone, and speaker
  • The role of the supercharged new Siri
  • Who the direct competitors are
  • Other AI wearables Apple is developing
  • And what is still up in the air before launch

Let’s dive into what Apple is planning for the future of AI-powered wearables. 👀

Compact Design Inspired by the AirTag

When we talk about size, the comparison to the AirTag says a lot. The AI Pin will feature a circular disc shape, thin and flat, with a shell made of aluminum and glass. On the side, there will be a physical control button for quick interactions. Apple wants the final version to be roughly the same size as an AirTag, but because of all the internal hardware, it will likely end up a bit thicker.

This design choice is no accident: Apple understands that for a wearable to truly gain adoption, it needs to be discreet, comfortable, and easy to use in any situation. Nobody wants to wear a device that looks like a costume piece or requires a visual adjustment to their everyday outfit. The goal is for the AI Pin to feel as natural to wear as a badge or a shirt button.

For attachment, Apple plans to offer more than one option. You will be able to clip the device onto your clothing or a bag using a clip, or wear it as a necklace by threading a cord through a hole on the top of the accessory. This versatility is key to accommodating different styles and use cases.

Charging will be wireless, in the same style as the Apple Watch. That means you will probably have a dedicated magnetic disc to recharge the AI Pin, keeping the design clean with no exposed ports. 🔋

Camera Focused on Visual Intelligence

One of the most interesting — and also most debated — components of the AI Pin is the camera. The rumors differ somewhat on exactly how it will work, but they all agree it will be a central element of the device.

According to Bloomberg, the pin will feature a low-resolution camera designed to capture information about the environment around the user, not to take photos or record videos. The camera would be always on and always recording, but users would not have access to the captured images. The main function would be to feed AI models with real-time visual context.

The Information, on the other hand, paints a different picture. According to that publication, the device would feature two front-facing cameras: one with a standard lens and another with a wide-angle lens, both capable of capturing photos and videos. If this version turns out to be true, the AI Pin would gain a much broader utility as a content creation tool.

Regardless of which rumor ends up being closer to reality, the AI Pin will rely heavily on Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature. This feature, which currently works on the iPhone, uses the camera to provide contextual information about places and objects around the user. Imagine pointing at a product in the grocery store and asking about the ingredients, or looking at a menu in another language and getting an instant translation — all without opening a single app. Visual Intelligence would be the bridge between what the device sees and what Siri can do with that information. 📸

Speaker and Microphone Still Being Decided

The AI Pin will include at least one built-in microphone, used both for talking to Siri and for picking up sounds from the environment around the user. This microphone is essential to the device’s concept, since a large part of the interaction will be voice-based.

However, Apple has not yet decided whether it will include a speaker in the AI Pin. Without a speaker, the device would not be able to play back Siri’s responses out loud or play any audio. In that scenario, the user would need AirPods or another connected pair of headphones to hear what the assistant has to say. With a speaker, it would be possible to have back-and-forth conversations with Siri directly through the pin, making the experience smoother and more self-contained.

This decision might seem minor, but it has a big impact on the overall user experience. A silent AI Pin would always require a companion accessory for full interaction, while one with built-in audio would work more independently. Apple is likely weighing size, battery consumption, and sound quality before making a final call. 🎙️

The Supercharged New Siri Will Be the Brain of the Device

If the hardware is the body of the AI Pin, Siri will be the brain. And we are not talking about the Siri you know today. The AI Pin will run the updated version of the assistant that Apple plans to unveil alongside iOS 27. This will be a deep overhaul, turning Siri into a true chatbot capable of competing with Claude, Gemini, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

An important detail: the new Siri will be powered by a version of Gemini, thanks to Apple’s partnership with Google. All the AI features promised since iOS 18 — which had not been fully delivered until now — are expected to finally arrive with iOS 27, along with new capabilities that have not yet been announced.

For the AI Pin to work as promised, Siri will need to be significantly more capable than it is today: understanding visual context captured by the camera, responding accurately, acting proactively, and doing all of this with extremely low latency. That is a high bar, but it looks like Apple is investing heavily in this direction. The idea is that you can simply talk to the pin on your chest and get smart, contextual, and useful responses without ever touching your iPhone. 🧠

Full Dependence on the iPhone

This is a fundamental point to understand about the AI Pin: it will not be a standalone device. The dedicated chip inside the pin will be similar to the H2 in the AirPods — efficient for specific tasks, but without enough processing power to work on its own. The heavy lifting will be handled by the iPhone.

Apple will position the AI Pin as an iPhone accessory, not a replacement. Company employees describe the device as the eyes and ears of the iPhone, capturing visual and audio information from the environment and sending everything to the smartphone to process and return intelligent responses.

This approach has clear advantages. First, it allows the device to be smaller and lighter, since it does not need to carry a powerful processor or a massive battery. Second, it ensures the AI Pin benefits from the entire software and services infrastructure that Apple has already built around the iPhone. And third, it keeps the smartphone as the centerpiece of the ecosystem — something the company does not seem willing to give up anytime soon.

On the flip side, this dependence means that without an iPhone nearby, the AI Pin would be essentially useless. Unlike the Apple Watch, which gained independent cellular connectivity over the years, there is no indication that the AI Pin will have that kind of autonomy at launch.

The Competition in the AI Device Market

Apple’s AI Pin is not alone in this space. OpenAI is also working on an AI device, developed in partnership with legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive. That device would be powered by ChatGPT and could also hit the market in 2027. Rumors describe the OpenAI product as something small, pocket-sized, but not wearable. Still, it would compete directly with Apple’s approach in the personal AI-powered device segment.

It is also worth remembering the case of the Humane AI Pin, which cost a whopping 700 dollars and ended up being discontinued. Humane’s device was praised for its innovation but criticized for its confusing user experience and steep price tag. One of its main issues was trying to be a standalone device without relying on a smartphone. Apple seems to have learned from that mistake by designing its AI Pin as an iPhone accessory, leveraging an ecosystem that already has hundreds of millions of active users. 📱

Another relevant competitor in this space is the Meta Ray-Ban, the smart glasses that already offer a camera, audio, and AI integration. Meta’s product has built a sizeable user base by being discreet, functional, and affordable — exactly the pillars any AI wearable needs to take off.

Other AI Wearable Projects from Apple

The AI Pin is not the only AI-powered wearable Apple is developing. The company is also working on AirPods with a built-in infrared camera, designed to capture information about the environment around the user, similar to the pin. Development on the camera-equipped AirPods is further along, and some rumors suggest that a version of the AirPods Pro with a camera could launch later this year.

On top of that, Apple is developing smart glasses that will compete directly with the Meta Ray-Bans. These glasses will feature a high-resolution camera system capable of capturing photos and videos, plus a second camera dedicated to feeding Siri with visual data for environmental context. One interesting detail: Apple’s glasses will not have a display built into the lenses. All interaction will be based on the smarter version of Siri that is on its way.

These three projects — the AI Pin, camera-equipped AirPods, and smart glasses — show that Apple is betting big on the convergence of wearables and artificial intelligence. The company clearly believes that the future of personal computing goes beyond the smartphone screen and that AI-powered wearables will be the next major frontier. 🚀

Privacy Will Be a Hot Topic

A device with a camera and microphone that are always active raises legitimate questions about surveillance, data collection, and consent. Apple has a track record of positioning privacy as a competitive advantage, and the AI Pin will need to honor that commitment clearly and transparently to earn user trust.

The company is expected to adopt visual indicators when the device is capturing audio or images, along with robust user controls — similar to what it already does with the camera and microphone on the iPhone and Mac. How Apple communicates and implements these privacy protections will be critical to the product’s acceptance by the general public, especially in markets like Europe, where personal data regulations are particularly strict.

Price and Launch Expectations

Development of the AI Pin is still in the early stages, and Apple has made it clear internally that the project could be canceled before it becomes a commercial product. If the company decides to move forward, the launch could happen starting in 2027.

Pricing is another unknown that will determine whether the product succeeds or fails. Apple wearables have historically not been cheap, and a device with a dedicated chip, camera, microphone, and AI integration is unlikely to come at an affordable price for everyone. The question that remains is: can Apple justify the investment with an experience that is sufficiently different from what the iPhone already delivers on its own?

If the answer is yes, the AI Pin could become another important chapter in the company’s wearable history. If not, it runs the risk of following the same path as the Humane AI Pin — interesting in concept, but rarely adopted in practice. Only time and real-world use will tell. ⏳
