The learning curve is minimal, the interface is intuitive, and support is solid. Most Zaps can be created in under five minutes without writing a single line of code.

n8n, pronounced as nodemation, was launched in 2019 by Jan Oberhauser with a different approach from the start. The platform was built under a fair-code license model, which allows free self-hosting while also offering a managed cloud service. This means anyone can download the code, host it on their own infrastructure, and customize how the tool works however they want. The n8n visual editor uses a node-based canvas where you connect triggers, actions, and logic to build automations of any complexity. That format attracted a specific type of user: developers, data engineers, and DevOps teams who needed real flexibility, not just ready-made connectors.

The philosophical difference between the two is clear. Zapier optimizes for breadth and simplicity, wanting any business user to start automating in minutes. n8n optimizes for depth and control, aiming to let developers build production-grade automation pipelines with full visibility into every data transformation. Both approaches are valid, but they solve different problems.

In 2025, n8n made a significant leap by raising $180 million and reaching a $2.5 billion valuation. That’s not just an impressive number on paper — it’s a clear signal that the enterprise market is shifting toward solutions that combine control, data security, and scalability without exponential costs. Global spending on workflow automation reached roughly $13.6 billion by the end of 2025, driven by AI integration and digital transformation across businesses. At the same time, Zapier maintains its relevance with a mature business model, constant updates, and an extremely loyal user base. Both platforms are evolving, but in quite different directions.

Pricing: where the difference really shows up

When it comes to pricing, the comparison between n8n and Zapier needs to be done carefully because the billing models are structurally different. Zapier charges per task, which is each individual action executed within a workflow. That means a flow with 5 steps running 1,000 times per month consumes 5,000 tasks. n8n charges per execution, counting the entire workflow as a single execution regardless of how many steps it has. For a simple 2-step Zap, the prices are similar. For a 10-step workflow processing 5,000 runs per month, Zapier charges for 50,000 tasks while n8n charges for just 5,000 executions.

n8n works on a different model. On the cloud version, the Starter plan begins at $20 per month and includes 2,500 workflow executions — not individual tasks. That changes everything. A workflow with 10 steps running 2,500 times still counts as 2,500 executions on n8n, while on Zapier that same volume would generate 25,000 tasks, requiring a much more expensive plan. The n8n Pro plan, at $50 per month, delivers 10,000 executions. For those who go with the self-hosted version, n8n is completely free at the community tier — you only pay for hosting infrastructure, which can run about $5 to $15 per month depending on the server you choose. A practical example makes this even clearer. Imagine a mid-sized e-commerce company running order processing workflows with 8 steps, executed 10,000 times per month. On Zapier, that eats up 80,000 tasks, requiring an enterprise-level plan costing over $400 per month. On n8n cloud, that same workload comes in at $50 on the Pro plan. It’s also worth mentioning the free tier from each platform. Zapier offers a free plan with up to 100 tasks per month and 5 single-step Zaps, which is genuinely useful for personal automations but completely unviable for any heavy production use. The n8n community self-hosted version has no execution limits imposed by the platform, making the free version truly usable for real projects — as long as you know how to spin up a Docker container. Each integration comes with ready-made triggers and actions, meaning you can connect two apps in seconds without manually configuring API endpoints. For teams that work with very specific software or lesser-known industry solutions, Zapier frequently already has a connector ready, eliminating the need for any additional development.

n8n has over 400 native integration nodes, a much smaller number in absolute terms, but one that comfortably covers the most widely used apps on the market: Google Sheets, Slack, GitHub, Notion, Airtable, Stripe, HubSpot, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, plus AWS services, Telegram, and Discord. The big difference is in the depth of those integrations. On n8n, each node exposes far more parameters and settings than the equivalent connectors on Zapier, allowing for more granular interactions with the APIs of connected services. Additionally, Zapier restricts payload size to about 6 MB per step, while n8n cloud works with 16 MB by default and can go much higher on self-hosted setups. For ETL workflows moving large volumes of data between systems, that difference is a dealbreaker.

The issue many teams face in practice is this: as workflows grow in complexity, Zapier starts showing its limits. Deeply nested conditional logic, loops, granular error handling, and data manipulation in non-standard formats can become a nightmare within Zapier’s structure. This is exactly where n8n shines, because it was architected from the ground up to handle complex data flows without sacrificing workflow readability. Teams that start with Zapier frequently migrate to n8n when they hit that complexity ceiling, and while the migration process requires manual effort, it usually results in more efficient workflows and lower costs.
