KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) just took a major step toward putting South Korea at the center of the global quantum technology map.

During the Quantum World Congress 2026, held in the United States, the institute led a delegation of Korean quantum startups and came away with something concrete: strategic partnerships signed with names like D-Wave, Microsoft, and Japanese institute AIST.

And it wasn’t just networking.

One of the startups in the delegation, OptiQ-Labs, already has finalized plans to open an office on the U.S. East Coast in November, marking a historic moment for the Korean quantum ecosystem. 🚀

The move is part of the Global Bridge Program, a KIST initiative that connects Korean startups with international research, business, and investment partners, with the clear goal of turning cutting-edge technology into real market opportunities.

What’s Behind the Global Bridge Program

The Global Bridge Program didn’t come out of nowhere. KIST serves as the lead organization for the quantum technology sector within the Deeptech Incubator Project for Startups, an initiative overseen by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and managed by the Korea Institute of Startup and Entrepreneurship Development. The core idea is simple but powerful: identify startups with high-potential quantum technology within South Korea and put them in direct contact with the sector’s top global players, whether they’re research institutes, major tech companies, or investment funds willing to bet on innovative solutions.

For this U.S. mission, KIST planned and executed the program in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Korea, helping Korean startups connect with research institutions, corporate partners, and foreign investors. This strategy isn’t just about visibility — it’s about creating real ties that lead to contracts, technical collaborations, and genuine global expansion.

What sets this program apart from similar initiatives around the world is the curation KIST does before any event or international mission. The startups that join the delegation go through a careful selection process where they’re evaluated not only on technological maturity but also on their ability to operate in international environments, communicate their value proposition, and adapt their business models for markets outside Korea. This ensures that when they arrive at events like the Quantum World Congress 2026, they’re already ready to engage on equal footing with companies like D-Wave and Microsoft.

Another point worth highlighting is the ongoing support the program provides even after events wrap up. It’s not enough to introduce a startup to a potential partner and let the relationship develop on its own. KIST acts as a facilitator in negotiations, helps structure technical cooperation agreements, and coordinates resources that make the next steps possible. This end-to-end support is what turns one-off connections into long-term strategic partnerships.

The Strategic Partnerships and What Each One Means

The connections established during the Quantum World Congress 2026 aren’t all the same — each one carries a specific weight and objective within the global expansion strategy of Korean quantum startups.

D-Wave: Access to Advanced Quantum Infrastructure

The engagement with D-Wave holds immense technical value. During the event, KIST and the participating startups kicked off strategic conversations to use the company’s quantum computing systems, giving Korean startups direct access to advanced quantum infrastructure for both technology development and practical application testing. For startups working on quantum solutions, having this access represents a massive leap in validation capability and product development. It means faster testing cycles, more reliable results, and ultimately a far more competitive final product in the international market.

Microsoft: Doors Wide Open for Corporate Collaboration

The engagement with Microsoft opens doors that go well beyond hardware. KIST facilitated exchanges between the tech giant and startups from the Deeptech Incubator Project, with the aim of building long-term business collaboration opportunities. Microsoft has one of the largest distribution and business partner networks in the world, which means Korean startups entering this ecosystem gain access not only to technology but also to potential corporate clients across different continents. For South Korea’s quantum technology ecosystem, having Microsoft as a strategic partner is a clear signal that the country is playing at the highest global level.

AIST and Q-STAR: A Bridge Between Korea and Japan

KIST also met with Japan’s Q-STAR and AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) to explore opportunities that strengthen bilateral connections between the Korean and Japanese quantum ecosystems. AIST is a benchmark in applied research and operates cutting-edge quantum labs that work closely with industry. The geographic and cultural proximity between South Korea and Japan also makes it easier to build smoother, longer-term collaboration, creating an innovation pipeline that moves from the lab bench to commercial product far more efficiently.

OptiQ-Labs: A U.S. Office as a Symbol of a New Era

OptiQ-Labs became the most visible face of this international mission’s success, and that’s no accident. The Korean startup announced it will open an office on the U.S. East Coast in November, becoming the first quantum startup backed by the Deeptech Incubator Project to establish a regional physical presence in the eastern United States. This is more than a geographic expansion — it’s proof that the Korean quantum ecosystem is already mature enough to compete head-to-head with the world’s best in one of the most demanding markets on the planet.

Having a physical presence in the United States completely changes the business dynamics for a quantum tech startup. It’s the difference between being a foreign company trying to sell remotely and being a local player with direct access to clients, investors, and strategic partners. The American East Coast, in particular, is home to a massive concentration of financial institutions, healthcare companies, and government agencies that are already testing or gearing up to adopt quantum solutions in the coming years. For OptiQ-Labs, getting there now means planting a flag in the market before it gets even more competitive — a smart timing play. ⏱️

It’s worth noting that OptiQ-Labs develops optical hardware for quantum technologies, backed by more than a decade of research in laser spectroscopy with isotope selectivity, resonance ionization, laser cooling, and trapped-ion spectroscopy. Among its technologies are ultra-narrow linewidth laser systems, laser stabilization, and ion trap systems, with the goal of delivering complete trapped-ion-based quantum computer hardware.

Who Are the Other Startups in the Delegation

In addition to OptiQ-Labs, other heavyweight Korean startups participated in the Quantum World Congress 2026, each with a unique proposition within the quantum technology universe:

Tools we use daily

  • xDots: develops diamond-based quantum sensing solutions for industrial energy efficiency. Its xEnergy platform combines diamond NV center sensors that operate at room temperature with AI and IoT to optimize equipment performance in real time.
  • Bright Quantum: develops on-demand single-photon sources for photonic quantum computing and communication, including high-performance quantum dot sources already commercially available and ultra-compact systems that operate at room temperature without the need for cryogenics.
  • SQK: develops QMEDIC, a medical imaging platform that combines quantum technologies and physics-guided AI to improve the quality of low-dose CT scan images while preserving critical anatomical structures.

The Vision of the People Leading the Project

Dr. Kang Sunjoon, director of the Technology Commercialization Office at KIST and the person in charge of the Deeptech Incubator Project, made a point of emphasizing that the goal goes far beyond attending events. According to him, international engagement needs to go beyond individual events and lead to ongoing collaborations with research institutions, companies, and investors abroad.

He also highlighted that, building on the connections established at QWC 2026, KIST will continue supporting Korean quantum startups in developing technology partnerships, expanding into global markets, and creating concrete commercialization opportunities. That statement sums up the institute’s philosophy pretty well: connection without continuity doesn’t produce results, and it’s precisely continuity that turns potential into real impact.

What’s Next for Korean Quantum Startups

The Quantum World Congress 2026 was a milestone, but it’s not the finish line — it’s the starting point for a series of moves expected to unfold over the coming months. KIST has already signaled it plans to follow through on the partnerships formed during the event, systematically integrating Korean quantum technologies into global research, industry, and investment networks.

The success of the engagements with D-Wave, Microsoft, and AIST is likely to attract new investors to Korean quantum startups, from both the private sector and government programs that closely track these companies’ performance in international settings. When a startup manages to validate its technology and business model alongside such heavyweight names in the global market, perceived risk drops significantly for investors. This makes it easier to raise larger rounds in the future and opens up room for companies to accelerate their product development plans and team expansion.

The outlook shaping up for Korean quantum startups is quite promising, and KIST is clearly positioned as the main driving force behind this transformation. The institute proved with this mission that it’s possible to build real bridges between cutting-edge research and the global market when there’s a clear strategy, well-chosen partnerships, and a genuine commitment to the success of the companies within the ecosystem. South Korea is increasingly and unmistakably writing an important chapter in the history of global quantum technology — and anyone following this sector closely knows that chapter is still very much in its early pages. 🌍
