Artificial intelligence and digital security have never been as intertwined as they were during the week that kicked off on July 13, 2026.

On one side, TSMC’s jaw-dropping numbers show that AI chips are moving billions and reshaping the global tech market. On the other, a ransomware attack shut down production at one of Coca-Cola’s biggest subsidiaries in the United States, a stark reminder that the more connected the world gets, the larger the attack surface becomes for anyone looking to cause damage.

And in the middle of all that? Billion-dollar valuations with no product on the market, vulnerabilities over a decade old finally getting patched, and researchers figuring out ways to manipulate AI assistant memory through email. It was a week that packed into just a few days everything that defines where technology stands right now: rapid growth, real risks, and decisions that will ripple far beyond our screens.

TSMC and the Chips Rewriting the Market

TSMC, Taiwan’s and the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, released results that left even the most seasoned analysts stunned. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported revenue of NT$1.27 trillion, roughly $40.2 billion. That represents 36% growth compared to the same period last year, driven squarely by demand for chips built for artificial intelligence. That segment alone accounted for 61% of the company’s total revenue. The June 2026 numbers are even more staggering: monthly revenue hit NT$442.68 billion, or $14.6 billion, a 67.9% surge year over year.

With these results in hand, TSMC decided to revise its own projections. The company raised its revenue growth forecast for 2026, now pointing to something above 40%, well ahead of the previous estimate of 30%. That upward revision says a lot about where the market is right now. Less than three years ago, the sector was dealing with a supply crisis triggered by the pandemic. Today, the story is completely different: the shortage isn’t chips in general, but specific AI chips with architectures capable of handling trillions of parameters in real time.

For the average consumer, the impact might seem distant, but it really isn’t. Every advance in AI chips eventually translates into smarter products, faster responses from virtual assistants, more accurate medical diagnostics, and more efficient security systems. Semiconductor technology is moving beyond a niche topic for engineers and becoming the invisible foundation of practically everything we use every day.

The Valuation Roller Coaster: Apple Overtakes NVIDIA

The week was also marked by a symbolic shift in the market. NVIDIA, which had been reigning supreme as the most valuable company on the planet, was overtaken by Apple as investors reshuffled their portfolios. At one point, Apple reached a valuation of $4.92 trillion, while NVIDIA sat just behind at $4.90 trillion. A slim gap, but one loaded with meaning about how money moves in this sector.

Speaking of money pouring in, the startup Thinking Machines Lab raised $2 billion in a funding round, reaching a valuation of $12 billion. The interesting detail? The company, founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati, hasn’t shipped a single product to market yet. The promise is that a solution will be unveiled in the coming months. The phenomenon isn’t new, but it’s taken on a different intensity with the generative AI race. Investors afraid of missing out on the next big technological leap are betting heavily on companies that, for now, exist more on paper than on shelves.

In that same vein of eye-popping numbers, Meta announced its planned data center supercluster, dubbed Hyperion, set to be built in Richland Parish, Louisiana. The project calls for a capacity of 5 GW and a price tag north of $50 billion. That’s already five times larger than the original investment plan, and some estimates suggest that once fully equipped, the total could surpass $250 billion. That’s the scale of infrastructure required to power the next generation of artificial intelligence.

Ransomware on the Production Line: The Attack That Stopped Coca-Cola

While the market was celebrating TSMC’s numbers, a far less cheerful story was grabbing attention in the cybersecurity world. The Coca-Cola Company revealed that a ransomware attack on its dairy subsidiary, Fairlife, forced a temporary shutdown of all production operations in the United States starting July 16, 2026. Operations in Canada, fortunately, were not affected.

This is yet another chapter in a story that repeats itself with alarming frequency. Industries that rely on automation and internet-connected systems have become priority targets for ransomware groups, precisely because the cost of downtime is massive and the pressure to pay the ransom is intense. The criminals’ logic is simple and brutal: the more critical the system, the faster the victim will want to fix the problem. And in the food and beverage sector, where distribution chains run on tight deadlines and limited inventory, that pressure is even greater.

What makes this episode especially relevant is what it reveals about the security of critical infrastructure around the world. Many companies still run on legacy systems, delayed updates, and inadequate backup policies, which makes life easy for groups that specialize in exploiting vulnerabilities. Cybersecurity experts have been warning for years: it’s not a matter of if your company will be attacked, but when.

Old Vulnerabilities, New Threats, and AI Being Manipulated by Email

Beyond the week’s headline events, the digital security radar picked up other developments worth paying attention to. Microsoft finally revoked UEFI shim bootloaders that had been around for 11 years, as part of its Patch Tuesday update cycle. The patches automatically fix Windows machines, but Linux users will need to apply the updates manually. This kind of discovery is always uncomfortable because it raises a tough question: if these holes were sitting there for that long, how many people already exploited them without anyone knowing?

WordPress didn’t escape either. The platform patched a critical remote code execution vulnerability, tagged as wp2shell, that existed in the WordPress core itself. The flaw allowed anonymous attackers, without any authentication, to execute arbitrary code on default installations, even without additional plugins. For anyone managing websites, the message is clear: keep everything updated, because every day without the patch installed is another day of exposure.

But the most intriguing find of the week came from researchers who published a new report on arXiv, titled When Claws Remember but Do Not Tell. The study demonstrates a technique capable of manipulating the long-term memory of artificial intelligence assistants through a single malicious email. The attack works like this: an email containing hidden instructions is read by an AI assistant with inbox access, which then saves a piece of false information about the user. That data is stored in the AI’s memory and goes on to affect all future sessions with that person.

This discovery opens up an important discussion about how artificial intelligence systems are being integrated into everyday corporate workflows without the security implications being fully understood. Assistants that read emails, access documents, and make autonomous decisions are powerful tools, but they also create new entry points for sophisticated attacks. It’s a vector that combines social engineering with the technical quirks of large language models.

The week also brought notable moves in the corporate world. A UiPath survey revealed that more than two-thirds of UK retailers, around 69%, only react to operational problems after they’ve already hit business performance. The study, released ahead of what’s known as the Golden Quarter, points to a troubling pattern of decisions based on hindsight rather than real-time data.

On the infrastructure front, Datadog announced its arrival in the Europe (London) region of Amazon Web Services, giving customers more options for storing observability and security data within the UK, with lower latency and stronger operational resilience.

The eSentire Threat Response Unit, known as TRU, published an analysis of how it disrupted a ClickFix-style malicious command in a financial sector client’s environment. The investigation identified the installation of three threats: DinDoor, a Deno-based loader; DenoRAT, a remote access trojan; and NightshadeC2, a sophisticated RAT linked to the TAG-150 group, active since March 2025.

ManageEngine announced post-deployment automation for TLS certificates in its Key Manager Plus, a certificate lifecycle management solution. The tool now automates the final renewal steps, pushing certificates directly to the destination server.

Finally, a landmark case for justice. The UK’s National Crime Agency reported that Thalha Jubair and Owen Flowers were sentenced for a cyberattack against Transport for London that caused tens of millions of pounds in damages and disruption for thousands of passengers. Each received a sentence of five years and six months in prison, in what was described as the largest cybercrime case in the country’s history.

The picture taking shape is one of an industry in full boil, with genuine opportunities and equally real risks. The combination of increasingly powerful chips, increasingly capable artificial intelligence models, and a security infrastructure still scrambling to keep up creates an environment where the stakes are high and the margin for error is razor thin. This week was a perfect microcosm of all of that. Technology has never stopped surprising us, and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. 🚀
