Relations between the United States and China have never been as intense as they are right now, and Trump and Xi Jinping are about to have one of the most anticipated diplomatic meetings in recent years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives on American soil later this Wednesday for what promises to be a tense encounter with President Donald Trump. The choice of venue couldn’t be more symbolic: the White House, in the heart of Washington, a capital Xi hasn’t visited in over a decade.

A red carpet is already prepared to welcome Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, when the couple lands at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday evening. An arrival ceremony awaits the leader who has found himself on a collision course with Trump on issues ranging from artificial intelligence and intellectual property theft to trade practices, rare earth minerals, and Chinese support for Iran during the American military conflict in the region.

The two-day summit, which officially begins Thursday morning and wraps up Friday evening, is no courtesy visit. On the agenda are topics that define the future of the world: the race for artificial intelligence, the tariff trade war, control of strategic minerals, and much more.

And as if the diplomatic pressure weren’t enough, the State Dinner brings together some of the biggest names in American tech, from Elon Musk to Jensen Huang, seated at the same table while the two most powerful leaders on the planet negotiate the future. 🌐

What’s at stake in this summit

When two of the most influential leaders on the planet meet face to face, it’s rarely to exchange pleasantries. This time, the meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping carries even more weight than usual, because the topics on the agenda have a direct impact not only on bilateral relations but on the entire global economy.

According to a senior U.S. government official, artificial intelligence will be one of the main topics of discussion during the meeting. And that’s no coincidence: the United States and China are, today, the two biggest AI development powerhouses in the world, and every advance on one side is read as a strategic threat by the other. Control over chips, advanced language models, and data infrastructure has stopped being just a tech issue and has become a matter of national security.

Thursday will kick off with a prestigious State Arrival Ceremony, with 479 military members from all branches of the armed forces positioned on the South Lawn, the main floor, and the Rose Garden of the White House. It’s the kind of grand reception reserved for moments of the highest diplomatic importance.

Tariffs are also at the center of the debate, and this is a point that directly affects consumers, businesses, and governments around the world. According to the same official, a broad agreement on possible tariff reductions on non-strategic goods is an expected topic of conversation. During Trump’s first term, the trade war between the U.S. and China sent shockwaves through the global supply chain, drove up prices on electronics, and created uncertainties that delayed investment across entire sectors.

And speaking of strategic minerals, this is one of the least talked about but potentially most explosive chapters of the summit. China dominates the production and processing of rare earths, chemical elements essential for manufacturing everything from smartphones to advanced defense systems and AI components. The leaders of both nations are also expected to discuss rare earth exports and possible export controls. It’s no exaggeration to say that whoever controls rare earths holds a powerful lever in U.S.-China relations, and that lever will certainly be part of the private conversations between the two leaders. 🪨

Fentanyl and a humanitarian case on the table

Beyond economic and tech issues, Trump is expected to push China to do more to curb exports of chemical precursors used in the production of fentanyl, a drug that has devastated entire communities across the United States. It’s worth noting that recent data released by the White House points to a 22% drop in fentanyl deaths, a result the administration attributes to a coordinated crackdown on the trafficking of this lethal substance.

Trump is also expected to push for the release of Gulshan Abbas, an American woman considered to be unjustly detained in China, where she has been imprisoned for eight years. The country accused her of participating in a terrorist organization after her sister publicly denounced China’s treatment of the Uyghur minority. House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans have expressed confidence that Trump will press for her release.

American tech at the dinner table

One of the most telling elements of this summit is the presence of major American tech figures at the State Dinner. The guest list is impressive and includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, and Apple chairman Tim Cook.

Having these executives present isn’t just protocol: it’s a clear message that the tech rivalry between the two superpowers plays out in corporate boardrooms just as much as at diplomatic negotiating tables.

Nvidia, in particular, is in a tricky spot in this geopolitical chess match. Jensen Huang arrives at the dinner carrying the pressure of billions of dollars in potential revenue tied to China, while at the same time needing to balance his relationship with the U.S. government. It’s the kind of tension that doesn’t show up in official press releases, but everyone in the room understands perfectly.

Musk, for his part, has a complicated relationship with China, where Tesla operates a massive factory in Shanghai. Any escalation in tariffs or deterioration in U.S.-China relations could directly impact the company’s operations. His presence at the dinner reflects exactly the duality that defines this entire summit: cooperation and competition at the same time, in proportions that are hard to untangle. 🤖

Meanwhile, First Lady Melania Trump is expected to accompany Peng Liyuan to the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, to explore works spanning centuries of artistic achievement and cultural exchange between China and the United States. A gesture aimed at softening the mood before the tougher negotiations.

Artificial intelligence as a diplomatic battleground

Perhaps no other topic concentrates as much tension and transformative potential as artificial intelligence in the talks between Trump and Xi Jinping. During a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump touted American supremacy in AI over China, using a term he has adopted for the technology: superintelligence.

Every important new technology brings challenges, and superintelligence is no exception. Whoever wins superintelligence wins. That is the group that wins. And we are leading now, way ahead of China and everyone else. And we are going to keep it that way.

In recent years, both the U.S. and China have ramped up their AI investments exponentially, and the technology gap between the two countries, which was once comfortable for the Americans, is closing at a rapid pace. It’s worth remembering that the Trump administration itself has invested in programs like Gold Eagle, which uses artificial intelligence to help discover software vulnerabilities and coordinate security patches.

Within this reality, the summit could have a significant impact on U.S. tech export policy. There’s internal pressure in the U.S. to relax some restrictions, with the argument that they hurt American companies more than they slow Chinese progress. But there’s also a strong camp pushing for tighter barriers, especially on cutting-edge chips and AI models with military applications.

Tools we use daily

What makes this debate even more complex is that AI isn’t just an economic or military issue: it will reshape entire sectors of society, from healthcare and education to transportation systems and critical infrastructure. When Xi Jinping and Trump discuss AI regulation or data sharing, they’re essentially drawing up the rules of the game for the coming decades. 🧠

The recent history between the two leaders

This meeting in Washington doesn’t come out of nowhere. Trump traveled to Beijing in May, where he met with Xi, and both sides reached a trade truce described as constructive, pausing a tit-for-tat tariff battle, but only for non-strategic goods. That agreement has held on a provisional basis until now.

During that visit, China also agreed to buy billions more in American agricultural products, like soybeans, along with 200 Boeing aircraft, an order the manufacturer itself confirmed. At the time, the 47th president said he had closed fantastic trade deals that would be excellent for both countries.

What to expect after the summit

Summits of this scale rarely produce immediate and definitive results. What they do, most of the time, is set the tone for the negotiations that follow, create communication channels, and eventually open the door for more concrete agreements in the months ahead.

On the tariff front, expectations are more cautious. Trump has used tariffs as a tool for pressure and leverage since the beginning of his political career, and he’s unlikely to give up that tool without getting something in return. China, for its part, has shown it’s willing to respond in kind, but also that it prefers economic stability over a prolonged trade war that hurts both sides.

What’s certain is that U.S.-China relations will come out of this summit transformed, for better or worse. The simple fact that both leaders are sitting at the same table, in Washington, after a period of such heightened tensions, is already a sign that neither one wants a direct confrontation. And with artificial intelligence rewriting the rules of global power in real time, finding a balance between competition and cooperation has gone from being merely desirable to absolutely necessary. 🌍
