Climate technology just got another important chapter in 2026, and this time the main character came from a pretty unexpected place: discarded plastic that never actually got recycled.

During the Trellis Impact 26 event, held in San Francisco, the startup Smart Plastic Technologies took home the Trellis Climate Tech Startup of the Year 2026 award after a pitch competition featuring some of the most promising companies in the space.

The recognition was well deserved. The company, headquartered in Wheeling, Illinois, developed an additive that activates microorganisms which literally consume plastic, leaving no toxic residue behind, requiring no new equipment, and demanding zero changes to human behavior. The degradation process leaves behind only carbon dioxide and water-based biomass.

As the company’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Sumathi Pakki, put it during her winning pitch of just two and a half minutes:

Plastic was never designed with its end in mind. We changed that.

And with 91% of the world’s plastics never being recycled, that statement carries a lot more weight than it might seem at first glance. Smart Plastic Technologies received the most votes from an audience of roughly six dozen people attending the event.

What makes this materials innovation different from anything we have seen before?

The vast majority of solutions trying to tackle the global plastic problem depend on something that is incredibly hard to change: human behavior. Sorting waste correctly, bringing packaging to collection points, rinsing containers before tossing them — all of it requires discipline and infrastructure. And even when people do their part, there is still a massive industrial processing chain that needs to work flawlessly for plastic to actually be repurposed. The result is that, in practice, almost nothing we throw away becomes something new. The 91% figure that Smart Plastic Technologies brought to the conversation is not an exaggeration. It is the documented reality of decades of failed recycling attempts on a global scale.

The additive developed by the company works in a way that completely flips that logic. Instead of relying on selective collection, industrial plants, or any kind of specialized sorting, it is incorporated directly into the plastic during manufacturing. According to Pakki, just a single drop gives the material the ability to break down in a controlled manner over time, with no new equipment needed. The microorganisms activated by the additive act on the material’s structure, breaking the plastic into compounds that do not contaminate soil or water. There are no toxins. There is no need for a second processing stage. The materials innovation here is not just in the product itself, but in the way it eliminates bottlenecks that once seemed impossible to overcome.

Nare Janvelyan, a climate tech investor at San Francisco-based Voyager, explained why the company stood out in the competition. According to her, the plastic problem is something everyone feels on a personal level, and the technology does not require any changes to human behavior, which goes over really well. That was one of the deciding factors in winning the audience vote.

Another point that grabbed attention during the pitch was compatibility with existing production lines. Packaging manufacturers, food industry companies, logistics operations — none of them would need to swap out machines or redesign processes to adopt the technology. The additive goes into the mix during production like any other component. This dramatically lowers the adoption barrier, which has historically been one of the biggest obstacles preventing sustainable solutions from truly scaling. 🎯

The three categories driving climate technology forward

The race for the main prize did not involve Smart Plastic Technologies alone. Two other startups took the stage to make their case. Airloom Energy presented modular wind energy systems aimed at data centers, utility companies, and the defense sector. Meanwhile, Helix Earth showcased a technology that removes moisture from air conditioning units to reduce energy consumption and improve air quality.

These three companies represent three categories that are buzzing in climate technology: materials innovations, data center solutions, and climate adaptation technologies. Each one was selected by a remote audience through a series of three virtual pitch competitions held in May and June, with one round dedicated to each category. In each round, five different startups went head to head.

In total, fifteen companies participated in the qualifying rounds. All of them had previously appeared on a list released in April spotlighting climate tech startups to watch in 2026, featuring companies with seed or Series A funding and customers already on the books. The chosen categories represent exactly where Trellis sees the highest customer demand, the largest investment volume, and the greatest urgency — at a time when founders need to build for scale with tighter capital than their predecessors had.

Materials innovations

Geopolitical tensions are reshaping supply chains around the world. Critical minerals, which form the backbone of batteries, turbines, and the electrical grid itself, have become pressure points in trade wars. Startups in this category are developing next-generation materials and systems, including battery materials, conversion of industrial waste into chemicals, high-performance biodegradable plastics, critical mineral recovery, and smart thermal coatings.

Data center solutions

The explosive growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure is reshaping energy demand at a pace the electrical grid was never built to handle. According to several research firms, this year tech giants like Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle are expected to spend more than 600 billion dollars on AI infrastructure. That figure is practically equivalent to what the entire global oil and gas industry spends annually to find, produce, and deliver fuel.

It is a staggering number. ⚡ And the startups in this category are building precisely the technologies that keep all that infrastructure running, working on clean power generation, predictive monitoring, AI-driven optimization, offshore infrastructure, and atmospheric water generation.

Climate adaptation

Extreme weather is no longer a distant future risk — it is a present-day operational reality for businesses across every sector. Startups in this category are building technologies that help organizations understand their exposure to these risks, protect their assets, and stay resilient as conditions grow more volatile. Solutions range from HVAC systems designed for extreme heat to lab-grown cocoa, aquatic ecosystem biosurveillance, AI-powered climate risk analysis, and soil intelligence for agricultural resilience.

Climate resilience starts with decisions that seem small

There is a tendency to imagine that climate resilience only happens through massive projects — renewable energy plants, industrial-scale carbon capture, or international agreements signed by heads of state. But what Trellis Impact 26 showed this year is that some of the most profound changes come from nearly invisible interventions, the kind that happen inside a yogurt container or a grocery bag. Smart Plastic Technologies understood that attacking the problem at its point of origin — during the actual manufacturing of plastic — is far more efficient than trying to fix the damage after the material has already been discarded into the world.

The potential impact of this approach is enormous when you start doing the math. The world produces hundreds of millions of tons of plastic every year. Even if a significant fraction of that volume were manufactured with Smart Plastic Technologies’ additive, the reduction in plastic accumulating in landfills, oceans, and soil could be substantial over decades. And here is a detail a lot of people do not consider: the plastic problem is not just environmental. It is also economic, because the costs of cleanup, contaminated water treatment, and public health impacts generated by improper disposal weigh billions of dollars on national budgets. A solution that addresses the problem at its root protects not just the ecosystem, but the economy as well.

Tools we use daily

Climate resilience also means creating systems that work even when people or institutions are not perfect. And that is exactly what this technology proposes: it does not demand perfection from anyone. The plastic degrades safely regardless of how it was disposed of, regardless of which country manufactured it, or where it ended up. Trellis Impact 26 was not just a showcase for Smart Plastic Technologies. The event brought together a diverse group of startups working on fronts ranging from energy efficiency solutions to biodiversity monitoring technologies powered by artificial intelligence. What became clear throughout the pitches is that the concept of sustainable development has moved beyond being just a stated value and has become a business model. Investors, industrial partners, and corporate clients are increasingly willing to pay for solutions that reduce environmental liabilities, and startups that understand this dynamic are building extremely relevant companies.

Biodegradable plastics as a category have been around for a few years now, but a good portion of the solutions available on the market still have significant limitations. Some materials classified as biodegradable only break down under very specific temperature and humidity conditions that rarely occur outside controlled industrial facilities. Others leave behind residues that, while smaller, still impact the ecosystem. What Smart Plastic Technologies brought to the table is a solution designed to work under real-world conditions, with a process that does not require composting chambers or specialized facilities. This puts the additive in a different category from the conventional biodegradable plastic alternatives already circulating in the market.

The award won at Trellis Impact 26 also carries important symbolic weight for the innovation ecosystem. When an event with this kind of visibility puts a company solving such a concrete and urgent problem front and center, it sends a clear signal to other entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors about where the most relevant opportunities lie. Sustainable development needs more stories like this one to inspire and attract talent.
