Okta has become the talk of the town in both tech and financial circles over the past few weeks. And for good reason — the company has racked up a nearly 145% gain this year, including a 23% jump in just the last 30 days. Numbers like that grab any investor’s attention, but they also raise a question that can’t be ignored: does this price still make sense? The catalyst behind this entire rally was Oktane 2026, the event where the company laid out its vision for identity management for AI agents. A new, promising market that Okta wants to dominate before any competitor gets there. But while enthusiasm is running high, the numbers tell a slightly different story. The estimated fair value for the stock, according to the most popular narrative on Simply Wall St, sits around $151 — well below the $204.88 where shares recently closed. That puts Okta in a pretty unique spot: fundamentals that are genuinely better than they were a few years ago, but a price tag that seems to have already baked in a lot of the AI optimism. So the question is simple and straightforward — is the market seeing the future clearly, or has it already gone too far?

What changed at Okta and why the market reacted this way

To understand the move over the past few months, you need to take a step back. One of the recent catalysts was Aembit’s decision to support Cross App Access, an open protocol introduced by Okta itself. This third-party adoption put the company’s ambitions in identity for AI agents under the spotlight, reinforcing the perception that Okta is building a standard that other players in the space could follow. It’s not just an internal promise — it’s a sign that the ecosystem is starting to move in the direction the company pointed to at Oktane 2026.

Okta also went through a transition period in its financial trajectory. For a long time, the market criticized CEO Todd McKinnon because, despite the company having an excellent technical solution, it couldn’t turn a profit. That question hung over the company for years and weighed on investor sentiment. But with the first-quarter results of fiscal year 2027, that debate seems to have come to an end. The question is no longer whether Okta can be profitable — it shifted to something far more ambitious: can Todd unlock the next big market — identity and access management (IAM) for AI agents?

This narrative shift is key to understanding the recent rally. The company is no longer trying to prove it can turn a profit — it already put profitability on the scoreboard. Earnings grew an impressive 76.2% over the past year, a number that completely changes the conversation. When Oktane 2026 arrived with a bold vision for the future of identity management, the market was already more receptive than at any other recent moment, because the financial foundation was finally backing up the strategic ambition.

The event itself was a turning point in Okta’s messaging. The company stopped talking solely about authenticating human users and started presenting its platform as the identity infrastructure for AI agents — autonomous systems that make decisions, access data, and execute tasks without direct human oversight. This repositioning matters because it touches on a real problem that companies are already facing: how do you ensure an AI agent only has access to what it needs, without compromising sensitive data or creating security gaps? Okta presented concrete answers to that, with new products and integrations that address precisely this blind spot in the enterprise AI market.

The result was immediate in stock prices. Institutional and retail investors responded with significant buying, pushing shares to levels not seen in a long time. But the enthusiasm created a classic market side effect: the price began reflecting not just what Okta is today, but what it could become in the coming years — and that’s where the risk lives. When the market prices in the future this far in advance, any operational stumble or delay in executing the strategy can trigger meaningful corrections. And that goes especially for tech companies entering new segments with big promises and still-undefined timelines.

Identity management for AI: real opportunity or hype?

The question of identity management for AI agents is more complex than it looks at first glance, and it’s worth understanding why it represents a genuine opportunity. When we talk about autonomous AI systems operating inside large enterprises, we’re talking about digital entities that need to authenticate, receive permissions, access APIs, query databases, and interact with other systems — all without a human supervising every step. The problem is that current security infrastructures were built with people in mind, not software agents. That creates real governance gaps that can be exploited, accidentally or otherwise, compromising critical data and creating compliance risks for organizations.

Okta identified this gap with precision and moved quickly to communicate its position. The company already has a massive installed base of enterprise clients who trust its platform to manage human identities. Expanding that to machine identities and AI agents isn’t just a natural extension of the business — it’s a competitive advantage that’s hard to replicate quickly. Competitors like Microsoft, with Entra, and other identity platforms are also eyeing this space, but Okta has the benefit of being perceived as a vendor-agnostic solution — meaning it works well in multicloud environments and with different AI providers, which is exactly what large companies need when they’re building heterogeneous tech stacks.

That said, it’s only fair to acknowledge that the identity market for AI is still in its early stages. Companies are beginning to deploy autonomous agents in production, but the scale is still limited compared to what’s projected for the next three to five years. That means the revenue generated by this new segment likely doesn’t show up in a meaningful way in Okta’s current numbers yet. The market is essentially paying today for a bet on future growth — which is legitimate in tech, but requires a level of confidence in the company’s execution that any investor should evaluate carefully.

What the numbers say about Okta’s fair value

When it comes to fair value, the exercise is always about trying to separate what the market is paying from what the business actually delivers — and in Okta’s case, that gap is hard to miss. With shares closing near $204.88 and the estimated fair value hovering around $151, the implied premium is roughly 35.7%. In other words, to justify the current price, the company would need to deliver strong growth over the coming years, expand margins, and convert the AI narrative into real revenue — all without any major stumbles along the way. Not impossible, but it’s a high bar for any company, regardless of the sector.

It’s worth understanding where that number comes from. The narrative that estimates fair value at $151 is anchored in specific assumptions: annual revenue growth of 10.5%, a profit margin of 21%, a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 35 times, and a discount rate of 7.47%. Analysts, meanwhile, project earnings growth of 21.4% annually over the next three years, versus revenue growth of 9.1% per year. That mismatch tells an interesting story — this isn’t a top-line sprint, it’s an efficiency story, where the company is growing earnings faster than revenue by extracting more value from the existing operation.

Okta’s fundamentals, to be fair, are genuinely improving. The company has already put profitability on the board and posted earnings growth of 76.2% over the past year. The net revenue retention rate, which measures how much existing customers spend over time, remains healthy, indicating that the client base is expanding its use of the platform. These are positive signals that justify a higher valuation than the company carried a few years ago — but not necessarily at the current level. It’s important to note that the current P/E stands at a striking 121 times, compared to an estimated fair P/E of 45.6 times. On top of that, a discounted cash flow calculation from Simply Wall St points to a value of $183.29 — also below where shares last traded. All of this reinforces the yellow flag around the current pricing.

For investors who are already positioned, the question is whether it makes sense to hold a stock that may have limited upside in the short term, but carries real long-term potential if the identity management thesis for AI agents plays out. For those still on the sidelines, the setup calls for more patience — waiting for a pullback that brings the price closer to the estimated fair value could be a more conservative approach that’s better aligned with the business fundamentals. The market’s enthusiasm is understandable, but it’s rarely sustainable when it stays disconnected from the company’s operational reality for too long. It’s also worth remembering that the total shareholder return over five years still shows a decline of 10.07%, which highlights that the long-term track record remains mixed, despite the recent shine.

What to watch going forward

Okta is now entering a make-or-break period. The market bought into the Oktane 2026 narrative with plenty of enthusiasm, and the upcoming quarterly results will be closely watched to see whether the company can translate that positioning into accelerated revenue growth. The key things to keep an eye on are clear: adoption of the new identity products for AI, expansion into new large enterprise clients, margin progression, and any signals about the partnership pipeline with major AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. Any meaningful data on these fronts will move the stock — in either direction.

Another point that deserves attention is the competition. The enterprise identity space is getting more crowded as AI becomes central to large-scale business operations. Microsoft, with its deep integration into the corporate ecosystem, has a structural advantage that can’t be ignored. Startups specializing in identity for AI are also emerging, and some of them may move faster than a company the size of Okta. The company’s ability to maintain its narrative leadership and turn it into actual market leadership is the real test over the next 12 to 18 months.

At the end of the day, Okta’s story in 2025 and 2026 will be written by operational data, not by Oktane slides. The company has the right ingredients — differentiated positioning, an established customer base, and an identity management thesis for AI that makes technical sense. What’s still up in the air is the execution. And that’s exactly what investors need to monitor closely, without getting swept up by the fast pace of the stock price or ignoring the fundamentals that do — or don’t — support the fair value the market is assigning to it today. 🚀
