Logan Township wants to ban AI data centers and sends a clear message to the tech industry
Data centers for artificial intelligence are spreading across the United States at a staggering pace, and not everyone is welcoming them with open arms.
In Logan Township, a town of roughly 6,000 residents in Gloucester County, New Jersey, the response came fast and direct: a proposed ordinance that, if approved, would ban the installation of any data center within city limits for good. The measure was introduced by the municipal council last week and also prevents the conversion of existing warehouses and industrial buildings into data processing facilities.

According to Minor, the town has not received any formal proposal for the construction of a data center, has not held meetings with companies in the sector, and does not expect to receive any such project if the ordinance is approved.
The confusion may have arisen because of another large development already approved in the area. In July 2023, the town granted site plan approval to Stalwart Logan Holding Company, which plans to build two industrial warehouses totaling more than 1 million square feet along Route 130. The company also secured a $42.75 million bridge loan from SKW Funding for the Logan Township Industrial Park, a 171-acre site.
However, Stalwart Equities has not submitted any plans to convert those warehouses into a data center, according to the mayor. The company did not respond to requests for comment from NJ.com. From the outside, data centers often look just like large industrial warehouses, which may have fueled local speculation. Harrison’s mayor, Adam Wingate, said in an official statement that while data centers may offer tax benefits, the town believes it is important not to turn the community into a testing ground without clear and proven safeguards in place.
In Millville, in Cumberland County, local officials are also working to block this type of development. The argument from municipal administrations is the same: current zoning rules were not written with data centers in mind, and action needs to be taken quickly to fill that gap before the industry moves in without any kind of oversight. 📋
